With the new year upon us, many of us are looking at ways to lose a few extra pounds. But if research and personal experience tell us anything, it’s that this is a very challenging (and often demoralizing) process that often has us counting calories to no avail.
Could it be that losing weight shouldn’t be our primary focus? What if instead we asked how to promote healthy weight, rather than placing all our focus on a specific number on a scale?
Research over the last few decades has shown that the health problems that come from being overweight aren’t just because we have more fat cells. Instead, they may be a reflection of the health of those individual fat cells — specifically, the immune health of our fat cells.
Improving the relationship between our immune system and our fat cells appears to be key to healthy weight, and we can help make this happen through our diet by choosing foods that promote immune balance.
This means staying away from highly processed and refined foods, especially added sugars and sugary drinks. Instead, choose foods rich in dietary fiber, polyphenols (plant molecules that may have a positive impact on immunity), and healthy fats, like omega-3s and olive oil.
